ABSTRACT

The industrial wastewater produced by urotropine plants is considered as a major environmental polluting factor and hence its treatment is required. In this work, strongly acidic cation exchange resins including C100H [Purolite], Amberlite IR120 and Amberlyst 15W were used for removing of urotropine from wastewater. Optimum conditions for the three resins and regeneration were studied. The required amounts of resins for efficient exchange of urotropine and amount of acid for regenerating process of exhausted resins were determined and the potential of these resins in removing of urotropine and ammonia from the wastewater were compared. It was found that C100H resin has a higher capability in removing of urotropine in comparison with tow other resins. This capability of C100H was 2 and 7 times greater than Amberlite IR120 and Amberlyst 15W, respectively. The comparison of results with other methods indicates that this method reduces urotropine concentration more effectively. The simple and fast conductometric method has been developed for determination of urotropine in wastewater in the presence of formaldehyde and ammonia without any interference

ABSTRACT

Ventriculoperitoneal [VP] shunt is one of the most common pediatric neurosurgical procedures. It has various complications that may have serious consequences such as shunt dysfunction, and unusual migration. Although, migration of shunt catheter to bladder, heart, umbilicus, rectum, pulmonary artery, and stomach has been reported, migration to vagina is a rare one. In this report we present a 16-month-old girl in whom VP shunt catheter was found in vagina. We will also describe the mechanism by which the VP shunt migrated to vagina

ABSTRACT

Occult spinal dysraphism [OSD] consists of a subgroup of spinal dysraphism in which the congenital abnormality of the spinal cord is covered by intact skin and is associated with dermatologic, skeletal, urogenital and/or neurological abnormalities. This study was undertaken to evaluate the early prophylactic effect of surgery on OSD on subsequent expression of neurologic and musculoskeletal abnormalities. Thirty six patients with OSD with tethered cord who underwent surgery for treatment from October 2001 to October 2004 in Department of Neurosurgery of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences affiliated hospitals were evaluated 6 and 12 months postoperatively including a complete history and physical examination with special attention on spinal cord and lower limb function, bladder muscular force, and urodynamic studies. The most frequent dermatologic expression of OSD included hairy patches, subcutaneous lipoma, skin dimple and haemangioma. Scoliosis was observed in 13 cases, among them 7 cases had split cord syndrome, 2 cases had hypertrophic filum terminal [HFT] and 4 cases had both of the conditions. Among those with split cord syndrome, 78.6%, 14.3% and 7.6% were bony, fibrocartilagenous and fibrotic respectively. All patients improved significantly after the procedure. It appears that prophylactic surgical intervention in cases of OSD is a safe and recommended procedure prior to the onset of neurologic deterioration

ABSTRACT

Background and aim: mentally retarded children and people, because of their special physical status, need intensive dental care. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate their DMFT and its relationship with sex, age, degree of retardation and dental care

Methods and Materials: this cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 165 [105 males - 60 Females] physically and mentally retarded patients, 6-18 year old, at six institutes for handicapped authorized by Behzisti organization in Babol and Babolsar. These patients were divided into 6-9, 10- 14 and 15-18 year old age groups. After clinical examination by mirror and dental explorer the related data were analyzed using SPSS programe

Results: mean DMFT in 6-18 year old handicapped persons was 2.31+/-2.92. Mean DMFT in 6-year-old group was 0.54+/-1.21 and with increasing age in 18-year--old group was 5.46+/-5.02. Mean DMFT among males and females were 2.06+/-2.62 and 2.76+/-3.37, respectively. Mean DMFT in educable group was 3.94+/-2.55, in trainable group was 2.5723.20 and in severely retarded group was 1.062 1.54

Conclusion: mean DMFT in retarded persons under study was similar to normal subjects at the same age. Mean DMFT, among these people, increased with age and was higher in females. Mean DMFT declined with increasing the degree of retardation. The level of dental care in these patients, was low
